Baby Steps
Recently, while trying to make some positive changes in my eating habits, I noticed how many things I was trying to eliminate from my diet at one time. No more sugar, caffeine, bread or wheat products, dairy, red meat! And adding more veggies and fruits that have not been as much of my diet as they should have been. Oh- and I need to exercise more too! While making these changes may be beneficial, I wondered if I was setting myself up for failure by changing everything at one time.
Have you seen What About Bob, a hilarious (and slightly disturbing) 1991 comedy starring Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss? In the movie, Richard Dreyfuss plays a psychiatrist who has just written a book, "Baby Steps." I won't give too much away about the movie so as not to spoil it if you haven't seen it, but I think "Dr. Leo Marvin" was on to something with the concept of baby steps.
When trying to make changes to your lifestyle, emotional patterns, parenting, or relationships, it can be overwhelming to try to change old patterns all at once. It could leave you discouraged or overwhelmed, tempting you to just give up. Instead, start with one behavior or goal that will be easily attainable, giving you the confidence and motivation to continue. Baby steps - having small, easily attainable goals that will ultimately bring you to the place you want to be - a healthier you!
